Working with Men and Fathers training
This training is about working with men and fathers and assessing risks in households where harm is suspected.
It's available to all practitioners from all Medway agencies and organisations.
Course content
The course will cover topics including:
- Finding out who is in the household—acknowledged and unacknowledged including non-resident fathers
- Understanding the need to evaluate family relationships between adults as well as towards the child
- Understanding where risk comes from in families and recognising patterns including personality disorders
- What works in building a relationship with men in families
- Working in partnership with parents to focus on child’s needs
- Involving men & fathers in assessments and protection plans
- Issues of race, diversity and class
- Serious Case review lessons.
Course objectives
By the end of the course participants will know how to:
- Ensure that everyone who has contact with a child is identified and assessed and include assessments of family relationships in contributions to reports and conferences
- Use research and evidence to quantify the likelihood of risk of harm to a child by carers
- Engage and include men in assessments by establishing effective working relationships
- Work in partnership with carers and parents to promote better outcomes for children
- Help develop protection plans that include men & fathers and better protect children.

Training is held via Microsoft Teams from 10am to 12pm on:
- Wednesday 21st May 2025.
- Tuesday 8th September 2025.
- Wednesday 21st January 2025.
