New Designated Safeguarding Leads and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads training

Please note: This training is no longer being facilitated by Medway Safeguarding Children Board and Medway Council. DSL training is now hosted by Kent CPD and The Education People.

This training is for education provisions and delegates attending must identify whether they are applying as the designated lead (leadership team) or as a deputy designated lead. This training is not relevant for Early Year staff.

Before completing the training

Before completing New to Role DSL Training, you must have completed Intermediate Child Protection Training (Level 3).

If this has not been done, you will not be allocated a place on this training.

Who the course is for: This training is for education provisions. If a delegates is attending you must identify whether you’re applying as the designated lead (leadership team) or as a deputy designated lead.

This training is not relevant for Early Year staff.

Cost: £165 per event.

Course objectives

By the end of the day you will:

  • know the role and responsibilities as a Designated Safeguarding Lead and deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • be able to help staff to identify child protection and children-in-need issues, including delivering training to staff
  • be able to manage referrals to partner agencies and ensure they’re prompt and appropriate
  • be able to understand the assessment process and effectively contribute to relevant meetings, both verbally and in written reports
  • be able to keep detailed, accurate and secure written records of concerns and referrals, including the transition between education settings
  • be able to give clear guidance and advice about how to manage disclosures of abuse, allegations about staff and concerns about parent and carer’s behaviour towards children
  • have knowledge of safe recruitment and safe employment practice at the school and be able to ensure policy and practice is up to date and implemented
  • be able to ensure that all staff members have access to and understand the child protection policies within the school
  • be able to promote the education setting’s child protection procedures, including regular updates and implementation
  • be able to encourage a culture of listening to the children and taking in to account of their wishes and feelings
